Recently I was given a big set of pro markers, which I have been excited about for a while. I have recently started to grow bored of watercolour painting and fine liners so it has been great to be able to change the look of my work without it loosing any of it's characteristics. The first few drawings I did were quite simple as I wanted to see what textures could be created and how the colours blended together.
1st piece using pro markers. Created to show texture and colour blend.
I have been happy with the pens so far, the range in tones is great and the colours overlap nicely. I have noticed though that when they blend edges distort and blur easily. One of the best benefits though is that you can make block colour easily. of course you can create block colour on a photoshop screen but these have a certain handmade texture which is refreshing. You can see this clearly in this one mainly in the chest area and skin coloured parts.
My second experiment was to try overlapping and line thickness. I found they didn't overlap very well, although some of the lighter pens did this wondefully and created new tones, the mjority of them did not. I also learnt how they worked and that they dry quickly, the line weighting is good and easy to switch to create textures.
2nd piece. showing overlapping, layering and line work.
The context of the image itself is based on Graham Norton playing an exciteable irritating priest in the cult comedy, Father Ted. The face itself does not look like him and neither does the way he is posed. Maybe drawing characters in the right environments might help. The clothing however is spot on.
